The human body is made up of several different chemical elements, but its main components are oxygen, hydrogen, carbon, and nitrogen. These elements, which are derived directly or indirectly from the atmosphere or from water, together account for nearly 95% of the total body weight. The remaining elements include the minerals calcium and phosphorus, which as constituents of bone account for about another 3% of body weight, and in order of decreasing amounts potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, and several trace elements such as vanadium, chromium, silicon, and selenium.
